Introduction to Borneo conservation
The Sabah State government has made its best efforts to establish numerous protected area networks of Tropical Rainforest in Malaysia. However, the areas have became “islands” floating in a sea of oil palm plantations.
Forest fragmentation disrupts the migratory routes of endangered endemic animals such as Borneo Elephant, and confines Orangutans and Proboscis Monkeys to very small and narrow habitats. This makes breeding more difficult and these animals become very vulnerable to any natural event like El-Nino.
Borneo Conservation Trust (BCT), a Sabah State Government mandated Non-Governmental Organization established in 2006, aims to connect these fragmented ecosystems of protected areas both for fauna and flora biodiversity conservation in Sabah.

Connecting isolated protected areas is the primary BCT Objective
BCT Objectives
- To acquire lands that are important for biodiversity conservation; especially, connecting protected areas and providing migration route for wildlife
- To bridge all stakeholders from producers and consumers
- To provide a platform for conservation-oriented organizations and people to work together for biodiversity conservation
BCT Activities
- Bridging stakeholders: governments, NGOs, corporations, education and the public
- Acquiring land titles for biodiversity conservation
- Rehabilitating acquired forests
- Establishing Oragnutan bridges
Legal Status of the Trust
