Borneo's diverse ecosystems are home to tens of thousands of plant species as well as scores of insect, reptile, bird and mammal species.

There's Much You'll Only Find Here
Borneo enjoys a high level of endemism, meaning many of its plants and animals aren’t found anywhere else. Its location and climate make it a superb incubator of life; the many ecozones and habitats are home to vast numbers of plant and animal species. 6,000 of its 20,000 plant species are endemic, along with 44 of its 288 mammal species, including the famous Flying Lemur and unusual Proboscis Monkey, shown on the right.

The plants found on Borneo are as unique as the animals. Carnivorous Nepenthes, or Pitcher Plants, are abundant in the highlands; the gigantic Raffelsia flower attracts pollenators by smelling like rotten meat, and at least 1500 different Orchids call this place home. In just one hectare of Borneo's rainforests, you may find up to 1,000 different species of tree! That's more than the total number of tree species in all of Canada and the USA combined.

Spotlight on Flora and Fauna
There are several distinct types of ecosystems in Borneo, such as mangrove swamps and coral reefs in coastal regions, highland montane forests, heath forests, peat swamps and Dipterocarp forests, which are the most biodiverse regions on the island. Each hosts a myriad of different plant and animal species. Below are just a few exmaples of the life of Borneo.
